My Experimental Valentine | “Oops”

Since my last post ended on a bit of a downer, I’ll share this more cheerful little story to make up for it.

Back in the Fall of 2019, I decided to try my hand at a short story, inspired by this social media post that ended up on Pinterest:

[source]

(Although for some reason I remembered it being with Adrien and Marinette from Miraculous....)

I dunno; I just liked the concept of the gentleman forgetting to propose but thinking he’d popped the question, and the girl being weirded out.

I was going to share this on V-day last year, but it needed a bit of “polish,” and I ran out of time. So I’m sharing it now. Better late than never, wot? ;-)

~*~

Molly Dunbarr’s cell phone buzzed, quickly followed by the happy little chime indicating a new text message. She set down her comb and unhooked the phone from the charger, quickly navigating to the text app.

The new message was from her best friend, Dan Ushitat:

Good morning, Molly Malone.
Are you busy today?

Molly smirked at his nickname for her as she mentally ran through her plans, and answered his message:

Good morning!
No, I
’m free all day

A moment later, he answered:

May I drop by around tenish?

What was the fellow up to? He never “dropped by” spontaneously. She wondered if it had to do with the dance last night, and for half a second she was tempted to worry. But then curiosity took over, and she replied:

Sure! That would be great

He responded almost immediately with:

Awesome! See you then.
Love you

Molly read over the text conversation again, especially that last bit—where he’d signed off “Love you.” He’d never said that before. Something prompted her to answer with:

Love you, too

and not worry about whether it was appropriate or not. After all, she and Dan had grown up together. At one time, she’d thought of him as her “other brother,” since he and Andrew had played together so often as boys. As she’d grown older, she’d thought of him as her best friend. But more than that, she reminded herself, he was her brother in Christ, Who had commanded His followers to love one another. All these things, she told herself firmly, gave her every right to tell Dan, “I love you.”

Still and all, they’d both been too shy to say it growing up. In fact, there had been a time when Molly had been unable to look him in the eye without feeling acutely self-conscious and nervous and just plain awkward. Likewise, Dan had seemed less than easy around her. Molly’s theory had been—and still was—that they were both the type who could sense other people’s emotions and read body-language…and they had each sensed the other’s nervousness, and it had amplified their own.

Ugh, Molly thought as she massaged some curl-defining lotion into her dark tresses. I probably came off as standoffish at best, or that I didn’t like him. It’s a wonder we’re even still friends after all these years. She smiled at her reflection, sliding a stretchy knit headband behind her ears. Proof that he’s a patient, understanding soul.

She went about her morning routine in a bit of a haze. Later on, she would be unable to tell you what she had for breakfast, what she said to her father and brother before sending them off to work, and to Mother before she left for her teaching job in town, or even if she mentioned Dan’s coming. All she remembered after that day was waiting expectantly for ten o’clock with a curious sort of excitement and a feeling that something unusual was about to happen.

She pottered about the house, picked up sundry craft projects and put them aside again, too distracted to follow the instructions. She laid out her latest sketch, intending to finish it…but ended up staring into space and musing over last night’s events instead.

She still smiled—a smug little smile, truth be told—to think she had actually convinced Dan to join the local square-dancing club with her. She hadn’t been sure dancing was really his thing. Growing up, he’d always gotten volunteered to man the CD player at their friend Jack’s parties. Apparently, Dan did enjoy dancing himself, too. And he’d learned the steps quickly, even retaining them better than she could, despite her having taken the introductory class before.

Last night had put their knowledge to the test. Every Spring, the town held a grand Square Dance Festival, and all the square-dancing clubs in the area—and people from all over the country, too—joined the festivities. Molly could still see the ladies in their frilly skirts and ruffled blouses, and the gentlemen in Western-inspired shirts—some of them even sporting cowboy hats and boots.

Dan had opted for something a bit subtler for his first Festival: Dark-brown loafers, brown tweed trousers, and a muted green dress-shirt. The only nod to the “Western” theme was the silver collar-tips Molly had found at one of the local thrift shops, set with genuine turquoise nuggets of a slightly greenish hue. The muted colors, Molly had thought, not only had a slight woodsy vibe, but harmonized well with Dan’s naturally tan complexion and dark hair and eyes. But then, Dan had always been good-looking, no matter what he wore, she had to admit.

She glanced over at her laundry basket, where the hem and part of the sleeve of her own costume hung over the rim, recalling the soft drape of the printed light-purple rayon, the fairytale vibe of the asymmetrical hem and lace-up embroidered bodice. She smothered a giggle, remembering Dan’s comment that they could pass for a couple from one of her favorite Disney movies…if Molly had worn a long golden wig.

She fell silent, recalling something she hadn’t paid much mind to at the time. Dan had seemed…distracted…several times during the evening, once or twice dancing with her instead of his current partner during one of the dances. She chalked it up to adrenaline—the excitement of dancing with so many other people, of the festive occasion—and being still a little unfamiliar with the more advanced calls.

At least, she had last night. In the light of day, away from the bustle and good cheer of the Festival, Molly wondered if there had been something on Dan’s mind. And now she thought on it further, she remembered catching him looking at her with a soft little smile and shining eyes—but she had chalked that up to “party mood,” too.

She sighed ever-so-slightly, unsure how she felt about that explanation. An alternative suggested itself…and she wasn’t sure how she felt about that, either.

She’d always liked Dan—at one time, she thought perhaps she could be happy with him—but as the years had passed, and he gave little to no indication of feeling anything more than friendship…well, she’d come to accept that they were just kindred spirits meant to enjoy a beautiful friendship for as long as God left them on Earth. Not that there was anything “just” about a kindred spirit, mind—

The doorbell chimed, shattering her reverie and alerting her to Dan’s arrival. Downstairs she flew, curiosity and a faint sense of apprehension whirling inside her. She assumed what she hoped would be a friendly smile, prepared to receive her old friend with a hug if he liked, and opened the door.

There he stood, looking spiffy even in dark-wash jeans and a black graphic tee with eagles on the front, smiling broadly, his dark eyes sparkling.

Hullo, Sunshine!” he beamed. He stepped over the threshold, gently wrapped his arms about her shoulders…and kissed her.

Molly couldn’t decide whether to back away or return the favor.

And before she had time to think further, he released her, still smiling—positively glowing, in fact.

Her brain refused to function. Her power of speech flew out the proverbial window. She stood rooted to the spot, staring at him with slack jaw and a heart-rate like a woodpecker.

Did you get to sleep okay after last night’s excitement?” he asked, as if nothing unusual had just happened.

She nodded dazedly, wondering if she was perhaps still asleep.

Dan shut the door behind him and began untying his sneakers. “I thought maybe we could discuss the details today, while it’s still fresh in our minds.”

Molly blinked stupidly. “Details?”

Yeah, sure—setting the date, how many guests, flowers, catering, all that sort of thing. We didn’t exactly have much time last night, and I didn’t think you’d savvy shouting over the noise.”

She stared at him in growing confusion, wondering if he had gone off his head.

He glanced at her, took one look at her expression, and raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong? You look…kinda upset.”

Oh, nothing,” she blurted. “My best friend just lip-kissed me out of the Blue without so much as a by-your-leave, that’s all, and now he’s talking about setting dates and catering, and just freaking me out in general.”

His forehead puckered. “Best friend?” Then his eyebrows shot up, as though a thought had occurred to him. “Wait,” he murmured. He grabbed her left hand and examined it. “Where’s the—? Didn’t I—? Aren’t we—?” he babbled, looking more worried and confused with each unfinished question. Then his face morphed into a goofy, lopsided grin, and he snapped his fingers. “That’s what I forgot to do last night!” he muttered, chuckling a little.

Molly peered at him suspiciously. “If I didn’t know you better, Danny-boy, I’d ask if you’d been smoking funny flowers, ’cause you’re not making any sense whatever.”

He laughed, covering his face a moment. Then he pressed his forehead to hers, scrunching up her curls in the back of her head—another thing he’d never dared in their growing-up years….

No, no; I’m not high or drunk,” he chuckled, with a bit of a sigh in the mix, “just idiotically absent-minded, apparently.” He straightened, giving her another lopsided grin. “The fact is, Molly Malone, I—I meant to propose to you last night. Had a speech all prepared and everything…only…I guess I rehearsed it and fantasized about how it would go so many times in my head…I…I forgot I hadn’t actually done it in real life. Sounds a bit stupid, I know—and more than a bit mental—but…well, there it is.”

Molly couldn’t have been more astounded if gravity had suddenly been reversed.

And to add insult to injury,” Dan continued, sticking his hands in his pockets, “I probably left the ring in my other pants, so I can’t even make up for it properly now.” He sighed. “I’m sorry—really sorry. Especially about…well, what happened a minute ago.” His cheeks colored a little. “I…I hope I didn’t—I dunno—offend you or anything.”

You—were—going—to—propose?” Molly croaked.

Yeah.” He flashed her a guilty smile. “Just out of curiosity…if I’d actually popped the question…would you have said Yes or No?”

I’d have said Yes, of course!” she cried, blinking against the tears perversely forming in her eyes all of a sudden.

And if I’d had the brains to bring the ring with me, and could ask you properly today?”

See previous answer.”

He lifted one corner of his mouth. “Even though I’m an absent-minded twit?”

She smiled indulgently. “I think we can chalk that up to adrenaline.” She gathered her courage and wrapped her arms about him, laying her head on his shoulder. “I love you, Daniel Ushitat.”

He hesitated only a moment, then slid his arms about her shoulders again. “I’ve loved you for a long while, now,” he confessed, “only the time never felt right to say so. Something always told me to wait—that you weren’t ready to hear that yet.”

She sighed, giving him a squeeze. “I thought as much. I’m so sorry.”

For what?”

Making you wait for so long—”

He put a finger to her lips. “Hey, now; good things are worth waiting for.”

She gave him a tiny smile. “Indeed.”

They shared a proper kiss this time, full of the new-found warmth and tenderness they held for one another.

Shall we go in and sit down?” Molly murmured a moment later.

Sure.” He smirked. “I guess we do have a wedding to plan, after all.”

Not to brag, but usually, I can’t write a short story to save my life (“This feels too shallow! I need DETAILS!”), yet here we have this one all completed in less than four Open Office pages (originally three, but...then I tweaked it. *Halo*). Two, if we count The Unicorn.

Sole Deo Gloria!

Any comments and/or suggestions (such as a proper title, LOL) are welcome, as always.

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,

30 Day Song Challenge | Day 25: Song that Makes You Laugh

To be honest, very little makes me actually LOL...but several things can at least elicit a smile or a chuckle, and “The Llama Song” is one of them. Many moons ago now, one of my cyber-friends and fellow message-board members (writing under the screenname of Crazed Celt) posted the link to this crazy video, and I was hooked. I think she also said their family had this as their answering machine message....

Ahh, fun times....

The Great Overhaul Tag!

First off, today at 1:00 p.m….

MY BABY BROTHER TURNED THIRTY!!!

*Confetti*

So Happy Birthday to my favorite brother! :-D

Now to the point of this post.

It’s tag time again, Gentle Readers! Kendra is overhauling her “bookshelf” and running a giveaway—

Why are you writing that? Anyone who reads your blog already knows. *Eyeroll*

Who let you out of your cage?!

*Sulky sideways sneer* Ask that crazy Elf chick in the yellow toga who’s obsessed with glitter-bombs and confetti-floofs. :-P

Pixie….

*Silvery laugh* Every living Creature deserves to be free.

UGH.
So anyhoo, Kendra’s set up this loverly little tag to fill out while she’s busy overhauling.

Quit nattering and cut to the chase.

I’ll chase YOU right back in your cage, you bad imp! Scram!

*Gremlin scrams*

*Snort* Now, then….

1. How long have you been following Knitted By God's Plan and how did you find me? At least three or four years—maybe longer. And I honestly don’t remember how I found your blog. Seems like I’ve just always been here, reading your posts and enjoying your style and sense of humor. :-D
2. If you've read any of my books, which? And which are your favorites? If you haven't read any, which are you most interested in? I’ve read the first three Bookania Quests, The Ankulen, Saffron’s Big Plan, The Prior Quest, The Derao, Frogs, Tears and Laughter; Water Princess Fire Prince, and Lady Dragon Tela Du. Also the first several chapters of It’s SciFi, People! and Cayra.
3. If you could redesign any of my covers, how would it look? Feel free to photoshop something, or just describe it. I have a dream
She’s got a DREAM!!!

ANTON!
Ahem. I’d like to make some fan-art covers for the Rizkaland Legends eventually. Something like this…

…but more polished. The Kastle is all wrong, and I should reverse Clara’s and Andrew’s positions, since she was in Upper Klarand and he was in Lower Klarand initially. Need to find a pic of Andrew with a cleaner face, too (but it was the only I could find with him smiling). I’m pretty proud of Amber hiding in the corner, though….
4. Of my WIP's, which are you most eager for me to finish and publish? Just off the top of my head, Worth of a King, Half-Hidden, Collinda and the Swan’s Secret, The Trilogy of One, Mermaid Footprints, Infiltration, It’s SciFi, People!; HaV Academy, Sing, Aling; The Mikada Chronicles, Tales of Ooladada (sp?), and Fire and Song. I mean, they all sound interesting, but those are the ones that jump out at me.
5. Which of my Pinterest Storyboards do you find the most intriguing? The ones relating to your WIPs, the “Would Make Great Cover Art” board, and the one with fun facts and clever tips and such.
6. Pick a fairy tale and tell me how you would like to rewrite it. I once had an idea for One-eye, Two-eyes, and Three-eyes…only instead of three sisters, they were three rag dolls our heroine finds in an old attic, that come to life when she utters a special chant…. *Shrug* That, or something to do with Snow White and Rose Red.
7. Recommend a book for me to read. The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen, if you haven’t. Seriously my favorite Lloyd Alexander to date! Also check out The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. Such a sweet, delightful story, very well written, with a surprisingly (mostly) balanced reverence for God and elements of fantasy woven throughout, and lots of happy endings and loose ends neatly tied up. It’s like The Secret Garden, only longer. Go read it!
8. If you and I were stranded together on a desert island, how long do you think that we would survive? It would depend on two things: How well we could work out personality differences so we didn’t kill each other (I can be a perfect…cat…in one of my Moods….), and if I could keep bananas down if that was all that grew on said island. :-P
9. What is a project that you're working on that you can't wait to release into the world? My Ýdára fantasy series and its spin-offs! I can’t wait to give you-all a “proper” introduction to Victor and Jane and Robert, and Harold and Elsie, and Lady Müriel, and Walter and Owen, Shasta and Sierra, and Huckle, and the Dragons, and Sítára, and Pearla the Unicorn, and Lady Silvertongue, and Gil the Green and his band of Yeomen (and -maidens), and Pádma and Fintána, and of course the Heirs of Dunsmüir, who currently comprise most of the Peanut Gallery on the ol’ blog….
10. What is a burning question that you have for me? Will you come and visit me someday? I’ll make popcorn! :-D Or perhaps I could visit you? In which case I’ll bring the popcorn. :-D

Well, that was fun, as always. Best wishes to Kendra as she ploughs through her overhauling. I’m sure her hard work will pay off!

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,

~R~

Elevensies Tag! (or, Tom Breaks Radio Silence!)

"What about elevensies?"

Miss Melody Muffin was so kind as to tag me for this fun little quizum, over a month ago. *Doink!*and of course anyone who reads my blog knows how powerless I am to resist a good tag. ;-) It’s taken me longer than I intended to finish this—partly because it’s hard to think of eleven random facts about oneself (except when one isn’t at the computer, of course :-P)—and then I forgot about it till this past week, when I opened my Word document where I pre-write all my posts! Oops.
My radio silence is also partly due to some very exciting things going on in Real Life (which is a story for another time, and one I need to write up properly). So here we go….

~The Rules~

1. If you are tagged/nominated, you must post eleven facts about yourself.
2. Then, you must answer the eleven questions the tagger has given you and make eleven questions for the people you are going to tag.
3. Next, tag eleven more bloggers.
4. Tell the people you tagged that you have tagged them.
5. No tagging back.

~Eleven Random Facts about Tom Wild Rose~
1.)   I notice that my Characters seem more real to me this past year than they ever did, save when I was just starting to write. Probably due to Kendra’s Character Encounters, and the influence of how real her own Characters are to her.
2.)   On the downside, I find myself more interested in (read: obsessed with)  how my Characters will look—which doll-kits will best represent them (which is another story entirely), what their costumes will look like, how to make tiny jewelry that can go on and off but still be durable, what hairstyles they’ll have, etc., etc., etc.—than actually writing their stories. *Halo*
3.)   It bugs the stuffing out of me to hear people say things like, “I should’ve went” (instead of, “I should’ve gone”), “The thing is, is…” (when there’s no need for that second “is”), “This is from So-and-So and I” (when, if you took out “So-and-So and,” the sentence would read, “This is from I”—it should be, “This is from So-and-So and me”), et cetera. And don’t even get me started on apostrophes being used on plural nouns (ex: “No Penny’s” instead of “No Pennies”), and then omitted on possessive nouns (“Sallys dog,” instead of “Sally’s dog”). Gak! Why can’t the English LEARN TO SPEAK?! (Name that line!)
*Ahem*
4.)   I tend to invent my own words and terms for things—mainly to be different and quirky, but sometimes because there just isn’t a word in the English language to convey the feeling of a thing. For instance, “skronky” just popped into my head one day, as I was thinking about something that wouldn’t behave the way I wanted it to (or something like that).
5.)   My best colors at sixteen were Pastel Aqua, Lavender, Pale Pink, Medium Blue and Deep Blue-green (which is really hard to reproduce in computer text, BTW). Over the past few years, however, my complexion has changed ever-so-subtly, and now all but the green (and possibly the blue) make me look sick and jaundiced!
6.)   Now my best colors are deep, rich jewel-tones like Ruby-red, Malachite-green, Royal Purple (yay!)…and even previously “forbidden” colors like Royal Blue, Black and even (which was a huge—very pleasant—surprise) White!
7.)  I have a pet rock. Actually two. One (“Clifford”) looks like a greyhound’s head (and apparently has been in the family for at least two generations!), and the other (“Rocky”) is one Mom spotted during a visit to the Spokane River. I have a picture of “Rocky” *somewhere*, but I can’t seem to find it. And I don’t have one of “Clifford” at the moment, either. :-(
8.)   As a kid, I loved snow and actually hoped every year for a White Birthday, but the area we lived in hardly ever got snow for most of my growing-up years. As an adult, I live in a climate where snow is a sure thing all Winter…but now I tend to prefer late-Spring/early-Summer-type weather. >Le Sigh<
9.)   As a teenager, I used to laugh in my sleeve at people who cringed at the thought of turning thirty. Now that I’m practically thirty myself, I can understand how they felt.
10.)                      …of course, that may be due to the fact that, emotionally, I’m still only about ten—seventeen on good days. :-P (Wow, that was revealing….)
11.)                      I have never attended a ball…or even a dancenot a formal one, anyway. Peters friend Matthew (affectionately christened Little John back then) usually had dancing at his parties, but thats about it. No country balls for this little wench. Sad but true.

~Melody’s Questions~

1. What is your attitude toward reptiles?
I must admit, I find them generally kinda creepy—especially the ones that can potentially grow large enough to eat me. *Shudder* Dinosaurs (which I call “Lesser Dragons” in my fantasy series :-P) and “Fire-drakes,” on the other hand—they’re kind of neat. They make for an interesting variation in the local fauna (and what’s a fantasy story without a fire-breathing Dragon, wot?). However, in general, I’m not much of a reptile person and prefer animals with fur…especially of the feline persuasion. (And please don’t look at me like that, Cledwyn. You’ll always have a special place in my heart, but let’s face it; scales, spikes and horns just aren’t very cuddly. *Pats head*)
—Er, sorry about that. My Characters tend to pop into my thought processes at odd moments. Moving on….
2. Do you know what a Mumakil is? Technically, mûmakil is the plural form of mûmak, which is a creature mentioned in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Mûmakil are basically giant elephants that live in the Southern parts of Middle-earth, and the “Southrons” (the people who live in Southern Middle-earth) use them for transportation. /TEXTBOOK
3. How many state capitals have you been in? Just one, I think. My parents took me to Sacramento, California on my fifteenth birthday for a tour of the capitol building. That was interesting. I especially liked the huge doors in the old-fashioned rooms…some of which would form a neat little hidy-spot when left open at the same time.
*EDIT* I think we drove through/near Carson City, Nevada once during a trip to Reno, but we didn’t get out and do anything there, so maybe it doesn’t count….
4. Have you read Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe? Yes; in fact, I found a copy at the thrift shop a few years ago! I wish the English characters had treated poor Isaac of York nicer, but I really admire Rebecca for standing up to that creepy blackguard, Sir Brian. Go, girl!
5. Have you read Jane Austen's Lady Susan? No, but I’m curious about it. I actually found a book at the library that had several—if not all—of Austen’s works in one volume, and Lady Susan was among them…but I had to return the book before I could get to it.
6. What is your favorite rendition of Amazing Grace? Generally a Celtic-styled one—amazing on the violin or Irish whistle!
7. Do you listen to country music? If we’re talking Country Western—which is basically rock-n-roll with cowboy hats and twangy, wailing guitars—I try to avoid it as much as possible, for convictional as well as personal reasons. If we’re talking “country” as in old-fashioned banjo-dueling and barn-raising-type tunes, now—bring it on!
 8. Would you rather have a squirrel or a rabbit for a pet? Neither, thank you. Squirrels belong out in the wild, and as for rabbits…well, I still have nightmares about the ones Bro and I had growing up. I am NOT kidding. Give me a sweet purrbie* of a lap-cat, please!
9. What is your favorite big cat? Tigers. Especially white ones, although they’re all beautiful—those gorgeous markings! :-D Mind you, I like Big Cats in general, but Tigers are at the top of the list for me.
10. Do you prefer your hair long or short?
I’ll admit, there are times (usually when I’m in a rush) when I wish I was brave enough to bob my hair up to chin-length so it wouldn’t take so much time to fix…but since my hair has no natural curl/texture AT ALL, it’d probably be really plain and boring. :-P On the whole, I prefer it longer, as it’s better for braiding and putting it up in the Dog Days. Anywhere from mid-back/APL (armpit-length) to waist is good. Any longer, and it just feels freakish and gets in the way of EVERYTHING. :-P
11. What is your favorite color of rose? Deep velvety red, pure white or white with a pink “blush” in the center; red-and-white; soft, pale baby-pink and a light lemon-yellow. Also blue, but those only exist in textiles (like fabric or embroidery)…and in my fantasy world. ;-) I like wild roses, too, even though they’re more of a Barbie-pink, but since they only have five petals, it’s not so in-your-face. And they smell so good!

~My Questions~
1.)   What Bible verse/passage has really spoken to you lately?
2.)   LOTR or Star Wars?
3.)   Quirkiest pet you ever had?
4.)   What is your favorite gemstone?
5.)   You’ve been invited to a costume party! Whom/what do you go as?
6.)   Complete this sentence: “I’d like someone to explain to me why….”
7.)   Narnia: Do you prefer the BBC/Wonderworks or Walden Media version?
8.)   What, to you, constitutes Godly womanhood and modesty?
9.)   Are you a girlie-girl, a tomboy, or somewhere in the middle?
10.)                      You’re given carte blanche to plan tonight’s meal. What do you make?
11.)                      Describe a pet project of yours that inspires you most of late.

12 Days of Christmas--the Rest Of The Story

Here's an e-mail my mom forwarded to me this morning--wow! I had no idea all those crazy things in The Twelve Days of Christmas had any kind of Spiritual meaning!

Enjoy....

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.-

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history for today.

Fascinating, aye? Reminds me of the version our family wrote one year. Need to see if we can remember it....

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,
~"Tom"~

Christmas Mad Lib—Part Two

Here are Aunt Betty and Cousin Brenda’s answers to the Christmas Mad Libs we did. See how filling in different words to the same “story” can make it almost completely different? (Their fill-ins are in large black text.)

~“My Favorite Things”~

Snailing-drops on corns and candlewicks on kittens,
Snarky copper kettles and warm woolen girdles,
Peacock blue paper packages clobbered up with beans
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cream-colored cheetahs and crisp banana strudels,
Spaceships and Model T Ford bells and schnitzel with meatballs,
Wild geese that snort with the Io on their fingernails
These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white fridge magnets with blue chintz sashes,
Garbage pails that pop on my left ventricle and eyelashes,
Silver-white solstices that hatch into Springs—
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the fox bites! When the cockroach stings!
When I’m feeling confusion,
I sloppily remember my phony things,
And then I don’t burp so brilliant!

~Rudolph—revisited~

Pinocchio, the mauve-nosed gopher,

Had a very  sour nose.

And if you ever skipped it,
You would even say it stamps!

All of the gooey lions
Used to sprint and call him high chairs;
They swimmingly let poor Pinocchio
Join in any crabby games.

Then 4/5ths foggy Easter Eve,
Abominable Snowman came to say,
Pinocchio, with your belly button so opalescent,
Won’t you scorch my land-speeder tonight?”

Then how the reindeer miffed him,
As they chowed out with ecstasy:
Pinocchio the purple-nosed reindeer,
You’ll go sideways in history!”

And here’s Aunt Betty and Cousin Brenda’s submission from Christmas 2012—what a hoot!

LOL! We laughed so hard while reading this, it’s a wonder our stomachs weren’t sore the whole rest of the day.

Silly, I know, but it made our Christmas a bit more cheerful. I see this becoming a tradition in our family—providing we don’t ever forget the value of a good laugh!

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,

Christmas Mad Lib—Part One

Well, apparently none of my Gentle Readers were able to participate in the Christmas Mad Lib thingie this year. So I’m going to go ahead and post Grandma’s and Aunt Betty and Cousin Brenda’s contributions—all hilarious, of course!

First up, Grandma’s submissions (her fill-ins are in large black text):

~“My Favorite Things”~

Snow-drops on girls and boys on kittens,
Festive copper kettles and warm woolen scarves,
Purple paper packages confused up with tea kettles
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cream-colored giraffes and crisp watermelon strudels,
Place mats and baby buggy bells and schnitzel with eggs,
Wild geese that fly with the angel on their elbows
These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white handkerchiefs with blue canvas sashes,
Daddies that scream on my belly button and eyelashes,
Silver-white winters that skip into Springs—
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the squirrel bites! When the bumble bee stings!
When I’m feeling excited,
I quietly remember my careful things,
And then I don’t fly so industrious!

~Rudolph—revisited~

Jack, the orange-nosed rat,
Had a very selfish nose.
And if you ever shopped it,
You would even say it steals!

All of the other muskrats
Used to shiver and call him ironing boards;
They sharply let poor Jack
Join in any quick games.

Then 14 balmy Christmas Eve,
Scrooge came to say,
Jack, with your elbow so pleasant,
Won’t you break my sleigh tonight?”

Then how the reindeer exploded him,
As they appeared out with crying:
Jack the pink -nosed reindeer,
You’ll go north in history!”
