There are
several songs I enjoy—several that help me calm down when I’m upset—but the
song I’ve chosen to feature in today’s challenge is “Out There” from Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. An odd
choice, considering it’s full of longing…and yet, there’s something so hopeful
an uplifting about it, too. And of course, Tom Hulce has an amazing voice, and
the score is epic (shoot, practically the whole soundtrack of that movie is epic).
Quasimodo has
to be one of my favorite Disney characters ever. Deffinitely my favorite Disney
Prince (yeah, yeah, technically he’s not a prince by birth…but c’mon, ya gotta
admit, he’s a prince of a guy).
I see a lot of myself in Quasi, and the overall
hopeful tone of this song is inspiring. Despite all odds, Quasi dares to believe
that one day, he’ll be able to leave the seclusion of the bell tower and live
among the “ordinary men” he’s been watching all his life…if only for a single
day.
[Perhaps
someday I’ll add a more in-depth analysis of this song, why I love it—and the
character of Quasimodo himself—so much…but just now I don’t have the emotional
energy.]
