Christmas at the Town House

This will be our first Christmas in our new home, and overall, the Christmas Season has been good this year. There have been some hard times, feelings of “bah humbug” and “all the magic of Christmas is gone!” but there have been some blessings tucked here and there.
[And I was going to post a pic of the new house with its new paint-job here, but apparently I haven't uploaded it from Mr. Phonie yet....]

We hosted a dinner party in the middle of the month with our Monday night Bible study group and had a blast. Everyone brought something to share, and everything was delicious!

The Bells of Grants Pass performed three times this month, the last “gig” earning us a new member—a young fellow who played handbells in college and learned some advanced techniques. Hallelujah!

It’s become a tradition in our family to see the live annual performance of the Nutcracker Ballet, and this year was no exception. They mayn’t have the best technique or choreography, but it’s still a good show, and it’s always fun to see what new things they add each year.
Speaking of which, our Nutcracker collection has mushroomed in the last few months. This has seriously been the Year of the Nutcracker for us, LOL. I’ve actually toyed (oops, my Cat Noir is showing 😊) with doing a Nutcracker Advent blog series like Kendra did a few years back....

This year, we joined up with a fellow member of the Bells of Grants Pass and her friend to form a recorder quintet. Despite some setbacks and scheduling what-nots, we were able to play some Christmas carols for a open house at one of the historic houses in town.
Clockwise from left: Sylvia & yours truly on Soprano,
Mom on Bass, Peter on Tenor, Ellen on Alto

I must say, I didn’t realize how much I missed playing my recorder until we started this group. Hopefully we can keep it up and do some of the Baroque and Renaissance music we looked at intitally. ’Cos that’s my music Happy Place. 😊

Anyroad, here’s wishing all my Gentle Readers—and anyone who happens to stumble onto my wee corner of the Blogosphere—a very Merry Christmas, a Blessed New Year, and much, much Joy!

God bless,
~ℛ~

Christmas Snippets

Here’s wishing all my Gentle Readers (all 2.5 of you, LOL 😉) a very Merry Christmas!

In lieu of actual Blog Post Content, please enjoy these Christmas-themed snippets from my Heirs of Dunsmüir series. (I’m sorry there’s nothing here about the Birth of Christ; I haven’t written that part yet. But if you like, you can check out my post from last year, and read the lovely poem my mother wrote.)

A little background: The setting is Sherwyn Hall, home of Gilbert “Gil the Green” Sherwyn, in the heart of Glenwood Forest. The time is shortly after Anton has found all the Heirs and assembled them in Glenwood for safe-keeping until they make their début in the City of Dunsmüir. Our Heroes and their friends are preparing Sherwyn Hall for the annual Christmas Party hosted by Gil the Green and his band of Yeomen….

Anton skipped through the corridor, singing an old Nórska Christmas song (off-key, as usual) with a refrain of kaladú, kaladú! Catching sight of Isabella, he beamed his sunniest smile and took hold of her hands, whirling her around in a skipping sort of dance. “God-yúl, mein lieb!” he chirruped.
     “God-yúl, Anton,” she replied calmly.
He stopped as abruptly as he’d begun, panting a little, still smiling. “Come with me,” he said excitedly; “I want to show you something!”
She raised an eyebrow. “What is it?”
     “You’ll see. It’s a surprise.”
     Her face re-composed. “Very well.”
He caught her by the wrist and fairly dragged her through the rest of the corridor, past where Jason and Ember were hanging holly-garlands in the dining hall.
“An’ where might he be takin’ her in such an all-fired hurry, then?” Ember wondered aloud.
“Did…didn’t we just hang some mistletoe on that end of the Hall a few minutes ago?” Jason mused.
“Aye, that we did,” Ember began. Then she paused, both eyebrows raised, as if suddenly enlightened. She burst out laughing. “Oh-ho-ho! the sly fox! Well, good luck to him, say I. Sure, an’ ’twill take more’n a bunch o’ mistletoe to thaw out the Ice Queen that much!”

* * *

“I’ve learned of an interesting custom among our Ánglos and Gaelic cousins,” Anton explained, his eyes twinkling. He pointed to a cluster of greenery hanging from the ceiling above their heads, accented with red ribbons. “That’s mistletoe—”
“I can see that,” Isabella deadpanned.
“They do say,” he continued, ignoring her interruption, “that when a man and a woman stand under it, they’re supposed to exchange a kiss—for good luck—and…something about…keeping the berries…under…a pillow….” His voice died away as her face assumed that icy, expressionless look, with the eyelids slightly lowered.
He grinned foolishly, like a child caught snitching cookies and trying to charm his way out of a spanking. “All right, I didn’t think you’d fancy that idea.” He dug about in those bottomless pockets of his a moment as he spoke. “How about a—ach, where are they?—ahh, there we are—how about a chocolate kiss instead?” He held out a small, mound-shaped candy, wrapped in silvery foil.

* * *

“How d’ee like our decorations, then?” Ember smirked.
     “They’re quite festive.”
“Did Anton show you the mistletoe?”
     “Ah—Ember…,” Jason whispered.
     Isabella blinked. “He did.”
     “And…?”
     “Ember….”
Isabella turned to face her. “And what?”
“Did he tell you the tradition that goes along with it?”
     “Yes.”
     “And?”
     Jason squirmed. “Ember.”
Isabella calmly began to unwrap the chocolate. “And he gave me a kiss,” she replied, calmer still…although her mouth twitched as she said it.
Ember’s eyes looked ready to pop out of her head. “He what? An’ you let him?”
“Of course,” Isabella replied, crumpling up the foil. “I’m rather fond of chocolate, after all.” She held the candy so they could see it for a second or two, then popped it in her mouth. “Merry Christmas, my friends,” she said. Then she disappeared down the corridor.
Five seconds later, Ember threw down the white satin bows she’d been putting along the garland, sputtering like a firecracker. “Och! Of all the—a chocolate kiss,  forsooth! Aiee! the cheeky—did ’ee see how she strung us along?!” She rattled off the rest of her tirade in Gaelic.
Jason giggled. “I think that’s rather clever. And you—you kind of—sort of—well, asked for it. I mean, you didn’t really expect—well, after all, Anton’s got his head on straighter than that, and—well, like you said, it’d take some doing for Isabella to—er—warm up that much—especially to Anton.”
Ember threw him a pouty scowl. “Don’t speak to me, boy-o; ’tis a bad mood I’m in, just now.”
“I noticed. Perhaps you need a chocolate kiss—”
Ember let out a savage roar.
“Never mind,” Jason squeaked, backing up a little. “Hand me another bow, would you please?”

* * *

“May I have the pleasure of this dance, my lady?”
Isabella stared at him, forming her reply—
“Say Yes, Isabella,” Lisbeth urged in Nórska. “It’ll be fun! And besides,” she giggled, “he’s adorable.”
“Well, I’m honored you think so, Princess,” Anton replied—also in Nórska. “Your sister doesn’t seem to realize it—yet.” He winked.
     Lisbeth’s expression was priceless.
Isabella’s mouth twitched, but she remained calm and collected. “I don’t dance,” she informed him.
     Lisbeth did a double-take. “Váss—?”
“But my sister does,” Isabella finished, covertly poking Lisbeth in the back.
Lisbeth flinched and stumbled forward, looking confused.
Anton bowed gallantly. “As you wish, your Majesty,” he smiled, leading Lisbeth towards the dance floor. “But I’m saving the next one for you anyhow,” he flung cheerfully over his shoulder.

* * *

The music stopped, and the dance came to an end. Tom and Ciaran stood facing each other, breathless yet smiling. Ciaran’s cheeks glowed—nearly obscuring his freckles—and his eyes sparkled. Tom smiled broadly. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had so much fun…or been so happy.
A murmur about the room drew her attention, and looking about, she spotted several people pointing at her and Ciaran. Some smiled, others nudged their neighbors. A few laughed or winked.
“Ciaran,” she whispered, “what are they laughing about?”
Ciaran also scanned the crowd with a puzzled frown. Then his face went blank, and he looked up at the ceiling. He lifted one corner of his mouth, chuckling something in Gaelic. “Look up, lass,” he whispered back.
Tom obeyed…and groaned. There, suspended from the bottom of the central lantern, directly above their heads, hung a bunch of greenery with leathery, oval-shaped leaves and white berries, decorated with cheery red ribbons.
     Mistletoe.
She cast a suspicious sideways glance at him. “Ciaran….”
“’Twasna’ intentional, I assure ye,” he protested good-naturedly.
“So what do we do now?”
A call of Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! rang out from among the crowd, and Tom fancied she saw Anton jumping up and down behind one of the taller gentlemen.
Tom’s heart froze. She’d never kissed a man in her life. She’d vowed to save her first kiss for her future husband. Did these silly people really expect her to…? Oh, it was too absurd—too mean! Too slushy. She couldn’t decide if she wanted to cry or simply pound someone into gravy. Specifically, the silver-haired lout who had dug up this ridiculous tradition in the first place….
Ciaran leaned down a bit, smiling reassuringly at her. “Might I be suggestin’ a compromise?”
Tom raised an eyebrow. “What sort of compromise?”
Without a word, Ciaran raised two fingers to his lips.
Tom grinned—a bit smugly, truth be told. She nodded. “I could live with that,” she smirked, mirroring his pose.
Amid cheers (and a few groans and cat-calls), Tom and Ciaran kissed their own fingertips, then gently pressed them to each other’s. They grinned a little foolishly at each other—Tom actually giggled at the ridiculousity of the situation—then gasped a little as Ciaran laced his fingers through hers, his smile no longer foolish….
Then he winked and draped a protective arm about her shoulders, gently leading her off the dance floor—and away from the mistletoe.

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A Christmas Prayer

Life is busy. So often the dull, mundane, grown-up things pile up, leaving us no time or energy for what's really important...like blogging and keeping in contact with friends. December is especially busy, with parties and church activities and other fun what-nots, and of course Christmas shopping for loves ones. But as Christians, we need to take time to be still, to remember the Reason we celebrate this special Season, and give thanks to God for making a way for us to be with Him forever.
And so, Gentle Readers, I leave you with this delightful poem, written by my mother many years ago, that beautifully illustrates this mindset. Enjoy!

At this lovely time of year
When festive is our way,
Help us remember You, Dear Lord,
And what took place this day.

When carols gay fill all the air,
May we sing of Your birth
And thank the Father up above
Who sent You to this earth.

Praise to the Father and the Son
Who came down on this day;
A Baby wrapped in swaddling clothes
With no bed but the hay.

When we see lights twinkling so bright
Upon the Christmas tree,
Help us remember that one star
That shone so bright for Thee,

To guide the wise men from afar
And shepherds in the fields.
May we allow Your Light to shine,
In us Your love reveal.

And thought the tree is pretty now,
It soon will fade and die,
Reminding us of that harsh cross
You hung on in the sky.

And when we wrap each special gift
For loved ones young and old,
Help us remember frankincense,
The sweet myrrh, and the gold.

And yes, the greatest Gift of all—
The Gift of love You gave,
To live and grow in all our hearts,
Our sinful souls to save.

Please help us keep You in our lives
As we go on our way
Through all the busyness and fun
The joyful Christmas Day.

Merry Christmas!

Popping back into the Blogosphere to wish each and every one of my Gentle Readers a very Merry Christmas!
And just for fun, I leave you with a little tag/quiz/questionnaire-thing I snagged off Kendra’s blog. *Wicked grin*

1.  What's your favorite part about Christmas?

Decorations and listening to Christmas CDs. Each of our decorations has a special story that brings back happy memories, and Christmas music (when done right—which most of our CDs do on the whole) just makes it cheerier!
2.  Does your family have any special Christmas traditions?  If so, which is your favorite?

Yes, we have several fun little traditions—a few of which we’re reviving this year, now that we’re back within driving distance of my aunt and cousin. I think my favorite has to be “light-riding,” though. That’s where we drive around town ogling the pretty lights and fantastic decorations people have put up. It’s especially fun this year because the main street in Grants Pass is all decked out with lights, musical “Christmas cards” (electronic murals that light up at night) and giant nutcrackers.

This one's my favorite 'cos his jacket is PURPLE! :-D

There’s a huge Christmas tree in the middle of town, and they even put a Nativity on the roof of the visitors’ center!

Another is singing “Silent Night” with all the lights off save the ones on the tree—er, garland—or the candles during our church’s Christmas Eve service. *Sigh*
3.  Everyone knows that music is best part of Christmas.  What's your favorite Christmas carol?
Aw, just one? Hmmm….It’s pretty evenly tied between “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Now Is Born The Divine Christ Child,” “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day”and “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” C’mon, ya can’t pick just one! ;-)
4.  What's your favorite Christmas song (i.e. non-sacred carol)?
Again, it’s a tie: Either “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire,” “Most Wonderful Time Of The Year,” or “Silver Bells.”
5.  What's your favorite Christmas story or novel?
My grandma gave me Annika’s Secret Wish for Christmas one year, and I fell in love with the beautiful illustrations and the touching story.
6.  What's your favorite Christmas cookie?
Gumdrop! (Recipe coming soon!)
7.  Do you shop at Christmastime?  Where's your favorite place to do Christmas shopping?
Usually the local health food store, to pick up tasty stocking-stuffers for Mom. :-D
8.  What's your favorite Christmas treat?
Besides cookies, you mean? ;-) Hot cocoa with real cream and special flavorings added to it (I like coconut and caramel best).
9.  Do you watch Christmas movies?  What's your favorite one?
That’s another family tradition—our annual “Scrooge-a-thon”! Each year, we watch at least one version of A Christmas Carol each week in December, with other classics like It’s a Wonderful Life and Jonathan Toomey added to the mix. It’d be hard to pick a favorite, though, ’cos they’re all so different.
10.  We all know how much fun setting up the Christmas tree can be.  Of course, there are always those ornaments that you made in first grade that you would rather forget but they go on the tree anyway.  Do you have a favorite ornament?  What's the story behind it?
One that comes to mind is the one we got my computer-geeky dad many, many years ago. It’s a little boy writing a letter to Santa…on his computer!

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless you all, and may He grant you a Happy New Year full of exciting possibilities, accomplished goals…and realized dreams!

Happy Things #5

Three things that made me happy today:

·        Finding the perfect beads for a Christmas project!
·        Discovering a new-to-me bookstore, Hastingswowie-zowie! That place is HUGE! (They had the books I was looking for, too!)
·        Mom’s promise to have a special Girls’ Day Out after Christmas. *Rubs hands with glee*

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,

Happy Things #4

Three things that made me happy today:

·        Finishing Grandma’s Christmas present, despite a couple false starts and such.
·        Chocolate-chip Cookies. ’Nuff said. :-D
·        The adorable Advent calendar Aunt Betty sent us via JacquieLawson—beautiful graphics, and good music!

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,

Happy Things #2

I have to confess, it was harder to find three “happy things” today. Oh, it wasn’t exactly one of those Blowtorch Days*; things just happened that were rather annoying (the pin-back on “Wild Irish Rose” popping off while I was changing the stone…just before we headed to town, of course) and even downright scary (driving home from Bible study in the dark, in blinding snow. Eek).
But God is good, even though my circumstances today weren’t fun. Life often stinks, but that doesn’t change the fact that God is good, and that His plans will succeed. (Mom and I got home in one piece, after all!)

So then, three things that made me happy today:

·        Mom coming in from teaching *just* in time to form the hamburger patties for supper. I was getting ready to, but she came in and relieved me. She’s not squeamish about handling raw meat! :-P
·        Mrs. A’s white-chocolate-peppermint-chip cookies, which she brought to Bible study to share. Yummy!
·        Meeting Peter’s engineering partner and watching them demonstrate their machine…which ran perfectly on the first try! And they even got it on video. :-D

Until next time, Gentle Readers,
God bless,
~“Tom”~

Happy Things #1, and a Mad Lib

Here it is, December already. Didn’t we just ring in the New Year a couple months ago?! :-P

Hysterics aside, I’m really looking forward to Christmas this year. Our family have determined—by God’s aid—to have fun this Season. Baking gingerbread bears and decorating them with special (naturally sweetened!) candies. “Light Rides” (driving about town and oggling the pretty lights and epic decorating skills of our neighbors). And a special Skype Party with relatives in California.
Part of our Skype Party with Aunt Betty and Cousin Brenda will involve a Christmas Mad Lib. We started this tradition last year and had a blast! This year, I decided to share our favorite Mad Lib with you, Gentle Readers, so you can join in the fun! Below is a list of words required to fill in the Mad Lib. E-mail me your submissions to tomwildrose[at]gmail[dot]com, with “Christmas Mad Lib” in the subject line.

With the help of my fellow judges (Mom and Bro), I will choose the funniest one and post it sometime around New Year’s Day, with the runners-up in a later post (’cos I’m sure they’ll all be too funny no to be seen). I’ll also include Aunt and Cousin’s submission from last year ’cos it’s sooo hilarious—ooh-hah!

I tried last year to borrow a page from Jenny-Rose’s blog and post three things that made me happy each day of December. I think I did maybe one day…? Bad, Bad Tom! :-P
This year, though, I’m determined to do one every day if possible—or at least more than Day One! So for starters, here are three things that made me happy today:

·        Having my very own case of foundation. Mom gave me hers a while back because I was always borrowing it to cover up the ugly dark circles around my eyes that I can’t seem to get rid of. :-P It was so nice to have it right there on my bureau, ready to use!
·        Watching Peter build the “Rube Goldberg” machine he and his partner are making as part of their Engineering class at the college…and watching him demonstrate it as he went along.
·        Trying out the fun extracts Mom and I got for our cocoa this evening. We got coconut, caramel, raspberry and coffee, and we already had mint. I tried a bit of coffee extract and a dash of cream in mine, aiming for a Mocha Latte!

Have a blessed Christmas Season, Gentle Readers!
God bless,
~“Tom”~
