Today’s
challenge features another of my favorite songs from Disney’s
Hunchback of Notre Dame, “God Help The Outcasts.” While this movie certainly has its issues
(although I must say they did a pretty good job of cleaning it up for
family viewing, compared to the original), there’s a reverence for
God and His church that feels more or less authentic to the era it’s
set in, which I’ve not found in most other Disney movies.
I’ve
sung this song off and on throughout the years since we first saw it
in the theater. The fairly simple melody and heartfelt words are easy
to follow, yet the song has depth to it...and one can’t help but
compare this song to Frollo’s solo (“Hellfire”) and think of
the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.
I’ve
often thought in recent years that this song would be beautiful
played on the handbells...and since my mother is a composer and the
director the the local handbell choir, maybe someday it will be!
